About the Item

Fairyland Lustre Imps on a Bridge and Treehouse Plate Wedgwood Circa 1923 This enchanting Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre plate is decorated in a rare variation of the desirable Imps on a Bridge and Treehouse pattern. Called the Roc Centre variation, this magical scene is populated by maroon imps crossing a bridge with brown elves watching on, while a green Roc bird flies above the imps between the violet sky and deep sapphire water. Surrounded by a bold gilt rim in the Twyford motif, this plate is described in detail in Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre, by Una des Fontaines. Fairyland Lustre is one of the most valuable and collectible types of Wedgwood porcelain. The creation of designer Daisy Makeig-Jones was a crowning achievement for Wedgwood in the early 20th century. The exceptional Imps on a Bridge and Treehouse was one of the last five patterns of Fairyland Lustre still being produced in 1940, one year before the last remaining stock was sold. The imps themselves were based on the Kewpies, invented by American poet-artist Rose O'Neill. Vibrant and unusual, this amazing plate reflects the superior quality of Wedgwood porcelain matched with the artistic force of Makeig-Jones. Printed "Wedgwood / Made in England" with Portland Vase mark and inscribed "W558" 3/4“ high x 10 1/2” diameter

A Wedgwood Fairyland lustre bowl designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones ca. 1925 and decorated with the 'Blue Willow' pattern. The ‘Blue Willow’ pattern is timeless, inspired by 18th-century Chinese blue and white porcelains and appearing on English transferwares since the early 19th century. Thomas Minton is credited with creating the standard pattern as we know it today circa 1780; from there, all the major English potteries, and some American ones, began producing ‘Blue Willow’ transferwares...
