Folk Art Bowls and Baskets

FOLK ART STYLE

Folk art is a genre of art that shares the creator’s traditions, offering not just an artistic display but an opportunity to learn about a culture. Antique, new and vintage folk art typically reflects a heritage or location. It can include utilitarian objects and handmade art as diverse as weather vanes, duck decoys, portraiture and paintings, carnival art and quilts.

Quilts are a quintessential part of American folk art but their roots are international, with quilting dating back to Ancient Egypt. The practice spread to Europe and was especially prominent in the Middle Ages, with one of the oldest surviving examples being the Tristan quilt made in Sicily in the 14th century. They were made as bedcovers and clothing, including as a layer for knights to wear beneath their armor. Native American folk art includes functional objects reflecting their heritage, such as baskets, textiles and wooden pieces.

Elsewhere, the vast range of work associated with Mexican folk art includes masks made by Mexican craftspeople for traditional celebrations and ceremonial dances. Mexican masks are part of the country’s folk-art traditions that go back thousands of years and play a role in festivals and theater.

Works in the folk art tradition are valuable because of the skills involved, like weaving, hand-carving wood and even stonework. Many folk artists are self-taught, while some train as apprentices within their community. By using available materials and taking a personal approach to their creations, artists ensure each piece is unique and conveys a story.

During the Great Depression, artistic materials in America were hard to come by, so artisans used discarded wood from cigar boxes and shipping crates to make highly stylized, notched pieces — most often picture frames and boxes — that are today sought after by collectors. This folk art style is called tramp art and was popular from roughly 1870 until the 1940s.

Folk art brings vibrant culture and traditions into your home. Browse an extensive collection of antique, new and vintage folk art on 1stDibs.

Set of Three Antique Dutch/Flemish Herring Barrels with Original Inscriptions
Located in Antwerp, BE
Set of Three Antique Dutch/Flemish Herring Barrels with Original Inscriptions, Late 19th Century A rare set of three antique wooden herring barrels (haringtonnen), originating from the Netherlands or Flanders, late 19th century. These charming folk art barrels were traditionally used in fish shops and village groceries to store and sell salted herring. Each barrel is made of wooden staves bound with wooden hoops and comes with its original removable lid. Remnants of hand-painted inscriptions and price markings remain visible, including “18 centen den ½ kilo” (18 cents per half kilo), referring to the historical retail price of herring. The barrels show a rich patina and authentic wear consistent with use and age. Such early shop fittings and objects of everyday folk culture are increasingly rare and today make wonderful decorative accents. Perfect for collectors of maritime antiques, rustic interiors, and antique kitchenalia. Barrel 1: Ø 31 cm (12.2 in) x H 23 cm (9 in) Barrel 2: Ø 30 cm (11.8 in) x H 23 cm (9 in) Barrel 3: Ø 23 cm (9 in) x H 16 cm (6.3 in) Period: Late 19th Century Place of Origin: Netherlands / Flanders Condition: Good antique condition with wear, scratches, and paint losses consistent with age and use. Lids fit loosely, as typical for old coopered barrels. Unmatched on 1stdibs – no other Dutch or Flemish herring barrels are currently available, making this complete set exceptionally rare. Antique herring barrels, antique haringtonnen, Dutch folk art, Flemish folk art, 19th century barrels, rustic storage containers, antique wooden barrels...

Nantucket Basket with Stencil Decorated Top, by Harry Hilbert, 1995
Located in Nantucket, MA
Nantucket Basket by Harry Hilbert, 1995, a Nantucket purse having a solid mahogany hinged top with colonial or federal style stenciled decoration on ebonized reserve, fine brass hinges minutely inlaid, and tropic wood cross-band inlay around perimeter; double carved wooden swing handles attached with bone mounts; nickel clasp; two tone woven cane wrap on oak staves; signed and dated by wood-burnt stamp on the mahogany bottom. This is a beautiful basket made with astounding craftsmanship by one of the finest artists in the field. The basket remains in superb, barely used condition. I found one scuff above the stenciled reserve. Harry Hilbert (1917 – 2010) was an acclaimed Nantucket Basket maker known for his fine inlay and superb craftsmanship. He originally made his baskets as personal gifts, but later sold them through Wayne Pratt...
