About the Item

This exceptional cigar display stand, crafted from mahogany-stained wood, is richly carved and composed of three distinct elements. Taking the form of a small shrine, the central element is a sculptural tour de force: it consists of four openwork columns formed by interlacing patterns and houses a finial decorated with vine leaves. The front is decorated with the same openwork motifs. The entablature is surmounted by a pediment bearing the inscription "Honor and Prosperity" and three medallions depicting the imperial family. The whole is crowned by two imperial eagles holding a chain from which hangs a finial adorned with a laurel wreath. On either side, two cigar displays are linked to the central sphere by a chain delicately resting on the thumbs of carved hands. The opening of the displays, whose fronts are decorated with laurel branches, pivots and is controlled by the rotation of the hands. Both elements contain a musical mechanism that will require restoration. The presence of Canton balls testifies to the fascination exerted by the Orient in France throughout the second half of the 19th century. It should also be noted that Empress Eugénie was a great collector and admirer of Far Eastern art, inaugurating her Chinese Museum at the Château de Fontainebleau in 1863. The only child of the deposed emperor, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte took the name Napoleon IV until his death in 1879. Worthy of a masterpiece of craftsmanship, our display stand, dating from between 1870 and 1879, is the remarkable work of a highly talented Bonapartist artist.
