About the Item

1930 Art Deco Walter Dorwin Teague Kodak 1A Gift Camera – Original Box Case Museum-Worthy This rare and highly collectible 1930 Kodak 1A Gift Camera, designed by Walter Dorwin Teague, is a landmark in both industrial design and photographic history. What sets this particular example apart is the inclusion of its original presentation case and rare outer cardboard gift box, making it a complete and exceptional set that speaks directly to the era's intersection of form and function. Commissioned by Eastman Kodak Company for the 1930 holiday season, this camera is a special edition of the No. 1A Pocket Kodak Jr., reimagined by Teague with an Art Deco faceplate featuring geometric patterns in black, brown, silver, and red—a bold departure from Kodak’s standard all-black designs. The result is a visual triumph that recalls the abstraction of artists like Mondrian and reflects the streamlined elegance of the Art Deco movement. This very model is held in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a testament to its design significance and cultural impact. As Kodak famously advertised it at the time, this was “one of the finest looking Kodaks ever offered.” Historical Significance: Walter Dorwin Teague, a pioneer of American industrial design, began his influential partnership with Kodak in 1928. Over the course of his career, he would go on to design some of Kodak’s most iconic models, including the Baby Brownie (1934), the Bantam Special (1936), and the Brownie Hawk Eye (1950). This 1930 1A Gift Camera marks one of his earliest and most visually distinctive contributions, merging modernist aesthetics with accessible consumer technology. Condition: Camera: Visually excellent; untested for functionality. Presentation case: Excellent condition overall, with a small interior rim chip (not visible when closed) and two faint marks on the lid. Original cardboard box: Rare and remarkably preserved for its age, with only minor edge and corner wear. The printed graphics remain crisp and legible, enhancing both the historical value and display appeal. This camera set is more than a photographic relic—it’s a museum-quality example of early 20th-century design innovation, and an ideal acquisition for collectors of vintage cameras, Art Deco objects, or important American design.
