About the Item

A fine Victorian English glove box, crafted in molded papier-mâché and finished in deep black lacquer. The rectangular form features gently rounded corners and a hinged lid. The exterior is richly hand-painted ,classical figures. The high-gloss lacquer surface exhibits the refined technique popular in English decorative arts of the mid-1800s, reflecting the influence of East Asian lacquerwork adapted through Western material and aesthetic sensibilities. Gilt highlights accentuate the hand-painted motifs and enhance the luxurious surface effect. The interior remains original, with a plain lacquered finish appropriate for the storage of gloves or small personal effects. Minor surface wear and fine age-related craquelure to the lacquer are consistent with age and add to the historic character of the piece. A distinguished example of Victorian papier-mâché decorative work, this glove box combines functional purpose with elegant, hand-executed decorative artistry.
