Antique Brown Wood Repoussé Chased Engraved Silver Stamp Box Case Dogs Continental Wood, metal c. 1900 Dimensions: H x W x D: 4.5cm x 10cm x 5.5cm Crafted around 1900, this antique stamp box features an intriguing design and construction that reflect the period when stamp boxes rose in popularity following the introduction of adhesive postal stamps in the 1840s. Early stamp boxes evolved from traditional writing boxes and inkstands, where stamps were stored alongside sealing wafers. As letter writing became more widespread, the daily use of postage stamps increased, creating a demand for dedicated and protective stamp storage solutions. Stamp boxes reached the height of their popularity from the 1880s until the outbreak of World War I. Their use gradually declined with the introduction of stamp booklets; however, antique stamp boxes remain versatile objects today and can still serve practical purposes, such as storing pills, paper clips, or other small items. The box is of a delicate rectangular form, with a carcass crafted from deep brown wood that provides both durability and warmth in tone. The wooden body is encased in richly decorated metal panels, most likely silver, embellished using a variety of complex metalworking techniques. The sides showcase repoussé and chasing, in which the metal is hammered from the reverse to create raised relief decoration. The base is further enriched with a hammered pattern composed of numerous circular motifs. Most impressive is the engraved lid, which depicts a pair of dogs set among foliage, with a large bird in flight above them. The interior is divided into three compartments, each fitted with a slanted base that allows stamps to be easily accessed and removed. This charming antique stamp box is a highly appealing addition to a collection and would also make a thoughtful and distinctive gift.
