About the Item

A Chinese lacquer game box from the 19th century, likely from the Qing Dynasty. It is made of lacquered wood , decorated on the exterior in black, red and gold with design of pavilions and figures, surrounded by detailed borders. It features intricate handpainted gold and red designs depicting scenes of Chinese imperial court life and architecture. The box contains several smaller compartments and trays, also decorated with traditional gold paintings, which would have held game pieces, counters, and cards. The small trays have painted patterns of playing cards.
