Exotic Coromandel Veneer
From our Writing Box collection, we are delighted to offer this English Writing Box by George Betjemann
Sons.
The Writing box of slim rectangular shape with a slightly sloped lid is veneered in exotic coromandel to the exterior with beautifully shaped brass mounts with substantial rivets and a flush mounted escutcheon to the lid. When opened the box reveals the original purple velvet writing slope with a gold tooled border framed by an embossed greek key. The interior is also faced in Coromandel with gilt brass hardware throughout . Above the writing slope, there is a partitioned section lined in Satinwood with two glass inkwells and a pen tray with further storage below.
The centre of the slope features a button engraved Betjemann Patent No. 27, pressing the button activates the secret spring-loaded stationary drawer which ejects out the back of the writing slope. The hidden drawer is finished with a solid Satinwood base and has multiple partitions for more private documents and letters. Finally the interior is finished with a signed lock plate by Betjemann. The Betjemann box dates to the second half of the 19th century Victorian England circa 1880.
