This intriguing box was crafted in late 19th century France. Made entirely of bronze, the piece depicts a baby warmly wrapped in blankets, its head resting on a cushion. Such novelty objects were popular during the 19th century, often created to be unusual or amusing, with no specific practical purpose beyond decoration or entertainment. In this case, however, the piece is both decorative and functional.
The hinged lid of the bronze box opens to reveal a small compartment suitable for storing various small objects. Its true appeal, however, lies in the design - the smiling baby serves not only as a charming decorative element but also as a symbol. In 19th century Europe, a baby represented innocence and purity.
