About the Item
ENAMELLED SCENE TO THE LID
From our Glassware collection, we are pleased to offer this Antique French Cranberry Glass Box. The box of oval form with chamfered lid and brass mounts decorated throughout with a central band of enamelled greek key to the body and an enamel design to the lid with a gnome stealing a young girls hat in a floral garden surrounded by a border of scrolling motifs. The box stood upon four unusual Egyptian revival style Pharaoh feet elevating the box from the floor. The Antique French box dates to the late 19th century during the Belle Epoque era circa 1880.
EGYPTIAN REVIVAL
is a style that uses the motifs and imagery of ancient Egypt. It is attributed generally to the public awareness of ancient Egyptian monuments generated by Napoleon’s conquest of Egypt and Admiral Nelson’s defeat of the French Navy at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
BELLE EPOQUE
is a period of French, Belgian and European history. It began in the early 1870’s and to ended with the outbreak of World War I in 1914.
