About the Item
A good antique Georgian engraved silver gilt Vinaigrette by William Simpson, Birmingham, 1826.
The vinaigrette having an engraved engine turned hinged lid with a floral border, the gilt interior having a pierced and reticulated hinged lid, with foliate engraved decoration. The base would have received a sponge that was soaked in aromatic oils that one could place under the nose to counteract the foul smells of late Georgian England. The edge if the box having three bands of engraved 'rope-work' decoration, the back of the box is also decorated with engraved engine turned decoration.
The vinaigrette is hallmarked in twice with the head of King George IV and the anchor for Birmingham and the date letter for 1826, the vinaigrette is in very good condition and is a nice example of this silversmiths work.
