Stunning Arts Crafts box in the shape of a book or bible. For the collectors of rare and possibly unique antique boxes we also have this striking Austrian specimen. All handcrafted out of polished onyx, cast bronze and with a wooden interior this object of virtue is an absolute joy to own and look at. As shown in images 11 and 12 this fine antique is marked 'MADE IN AUSTRIA' in the back of one of the bronze hinges. Around the turn of the century, Vienna (as the capital of Austria) was considered the Paris of Northern Europe and it was there that some of the most elegant and stylish Arts and Crafts was created. This rather elegant Arts Crafts style would later become known as the Viennese Secession. Creating a jewelry box (or possibly it was used for other purposes) out of a fragile material as onyx on the one hand and something as hard and strong as bronze on the other certainly takes a brave artisan and for it to have survived in this excellent condition is like an ode to its maker(s). Only when you look at this box from a certain angle, can you see that there are some minor scratches in the onyx around the two hinges on the front (see image 14). We are certain that, at some point in time, someone polished or cleaned the edges of the hinges and slightly scratched the surface there. Otherwise this unique work of beauty is of museum quality and condition and it will look marvelous, no matter where you decide to use it for or where you decide to have it on display.
