About the Item

This is a magnificent antique Victorian burr walnut writing slope and stationery box compendium, circa 1860 in date. The top lifts up to reveal a tiered series of compartments for writing paper, envelopes and other stationery items, while the writing slope folds down and unveils a slide out compartment for ink bottles and further compartments for pens and papers and features the original double black leather inset with gilt edging. This is a highly decorative piece which will make a statement once placed on any period desk. Condition: In excellent original untouched condition, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 33 x width 43 x depth 31 - When closed Dimensions in inches: Height 1 foot, 1 inch x width 1 foot, 5 inches x depth 1 foot, 0 inches - When closed Figured walnut and burr walnut were considered as the most attractive varieties of walnut. Burr walnut veneer was taken from the specific part of the tree where ‘growths’ sprouting smaller branches and/ or roots would occur. As these ‘growth’ areas were limited in both occurrence and size, larger veneers were hard to source and often on bigger furniture (tables, desks, bureaus, cabinets etc), these veneers would have to be carefully joined by matching up the pieces or blending them together.
