A stunning example of 1930s Art Deco glamour, this Elgin American ladies compact mirror embodies the modernist sophistication and machine-age aesthetic of the era. The compact’s octagonal form is accentuated by a dazzling mint green enamel design set against gleaming chromed metal, creating a brilliant play of light and color.
The geometric pattern is particularly striking a series of stepped lines and shapes that recall both Aztec-inspired ornamentation and futuristic circuit-board designs, making this compact appear decades ahead of its time. The asymmetrical composition and deliberate lack of repetition give the design a highly modern, avant-garde energy that reflects the experimental spirit of the Art Deco period.
Crafted by the Elgin American Manufacturing Company, one of the most celebrated American makers of fine compacts, cigarette cases, and vanity accessories of the early 20th century, this piece combines artistry with ingenuity. The interior reveals a mirror on one side, while the opposite panel features a rotating dial mechanism that opens in a circular motion to access the original rouge, a second compartment for additional rouge or powder, and a sifter for loose powder.
Complete with its original ball clasp closure and elegant wristlet chain, this compact was designed for a lady on the go, the perfect accessory for an evening at a jazz club or cocktail party.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with only minor enamel loss consistent with age.
