This sculptural articulated swan box/bonbonnière (bonbon box) or cachepot is a refined example of mid-20th-century Portuguese decorative metalwork, uniting traditional craftsmanship with a whimsical element of surprise. Cast in bronze and finished in bright silver plate, the swan is finely modeled with deeply chased plumage, a gracefully arched neck, and inset glass eyes that lend the figure an expressive, lifelike presence.
The defining feature is its hinged, articulated wings, which open outward to reveal a concealed interior fitted with a removable metal liner. This ingenious mechanism places the piece firmly within the European tradition of novelty table objects—often used as bonbonnières or sweet boxes—designed to delight guests through both form and function. When closed, the wings sit flush against the body, restoring the illusion of a naturalistic swan at rest; when opened, the object transforms into a functional container.
