About the Item
A wonderful Arts and Crafts hand-crafted copper and Ruskin enamel lidded casket. Made in England circa 1905 and attributed to A E Jones of Birmingham, this very decorative box was most probably retailed by Liberty's in London in the early 20th Century in the Arts
Crafts, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil era.
It features a curvilinear protrusion on the lid, topped with a large and very decorative turquoise Ruskin enamel roundel, pottery stone or cabochon. The Ruskin enamel is in excellent condition and has a great vibrant turquoise colour. The design is reminiscent of depictions of Jules Verne’s ‘Nautilus’ submarine in '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea'. There is a lovely contrast of the cool turquoise of the Ruskin enamel against the warm red of the copper.
The copper box has riveted corners and is all hand made with a lovely hammered finish. The interior is lined with cedar wood. The hand made hinges work and close well, and it is all in good condition.
This box is a wonderful survivor, very collectable, and highly representative of the Arts
Crafts movement.
