A Chinese Carved Red Lacquer Cinnabar Box, 19th Century
Provenance: Private Australian Collection.
Description:
Cinnabar is a red mineral composed of mercury sulfide, which is used as a pigment. The technique of carving into thick layers of lacquer, known as Qidiao (漆雕), was developed in China around the 12th century CE. These boxes were often used for holding incense, cosmetics, or papers. The lid of the box is often decorated with intricate scenes.
