About the Item

An elegant and intricately detailed Chinese export folding game box, crafted from lacquered wood with gilded decoration, dating to the early 19th century. The exterior features beautifully rendered court scenes in gold, surrounded by traditional borders and decorative motifs, all set against a deep black lacquer ground. The artistry is rich and reflects the refined craftsmanship of the period. When opened, the box reveals a complete backgammon playing field, hand painted in gold and red lacquer, framed within a perfectly preserved hinged structure. Though game pieces are not included, the box itself remains a striking decorative object and collectible display piece. Open the board measures 19.5" square.
