About the Item

This painted wooden box is a 19th-century Chinese snack box, once presented as a gift for a holiday or special occasion. To the delight of the recipients, the box would have been filled with a bounty of popular snacks like roasted melon seeds, dried fruit, and cinnamon-toasted soybeans. This square example is finished with black lacquer and hand-painted with various scenes of a scholar in nature. Perhaps depicting a tale from a novel or play, each side of the box is painted with a different vignette of a robed gentleman and his attendant admiring the view beside a mountain-and-water landscape. Now faded from years of use, the box has an incredible crackled texture and a smooth patina that calls to be touched. Additional Dimensions: Interior: 13.5"W x 13.5"D Lid: 4.75"H
