About the Item

A fine early Meiji period Japanese cloisonne enamel box decorated with a graceful crane in flight among stylized clouds, with a sparrow perched near a flowering tree. The domed lid presents a dynamic scene of the crane gliding above swirling cloud bands, executed in a palette of soft turquoise, white, blue, red, and earth tones. The composition is characteristic of early Meiji cloisonne, where symbolic birds and patterned grounds were favored over later naturalistic styles. The lower portion of the box features an allover floral ground composed of interlaced leaves and blossoms worked in delicate wire. The colors remain vibrant, forming a richly textured surface that complements the imagery on the lid. The sparrow and tree motifs add charm and narrative depth, subtly integrated among the surrounding patterns. A narrow gilt copper rim separates the lid from the body, while the foot is encircled by a traditional geometric border. The craftsmanship, enamel density, and early palette place this box securely within early Meiji production before the emergence of the pictorial Kyoto school. A beautiful and well preserved example suitable for collectors of Japanese cloisonne, early Meiji enamel, or those seeking a compact artwork with symbolic Japanese themes.
