Sterling Silver Mounts Dated 1908
From our Games Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this good quality silver mounted shagreen card box. The card box of slim rectangular form veneered in striking shagreen to the exterior mounted to the lid with sterling silver having scrollwork corners hallmarked London and dated 1908 during the Art Nouveau period. The interior of the box is lined in a cushioned green material with a central partition housing two decks of vintage cards featuring dogs.
Shagreen is a leather made from sharkskin or the skin of a Stingray. This type of Shagreen was first made popular by Jean-Claude Galluchat (d1774) a master leather worker in the Court of Louis XV in France. It became a fashion amongst the French aristocracy and later throughout Europe. Shagreen is derived from the French word “Chagrin”.
Art Nouveau was an international style of art and architecture, especially the decorative arts. It was inspired by natural forms such as the curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism, movement and the use of modern materials particularly iron, glass and ceramics to create unusual forms. It was popular between 1890 and 1910 during the Belle Époque period and before the First World War. It was a reaction against the academic art, eclecticism and historicism of 19th century architecture and decoration.
Sterling Silver is an alloy composed by weight of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness (parts per thousand) of 925.
