About the Item
A rare and exceptional Welsh or English antique porcelain bathroom box hand-painted with floral designs and dating from the early to mid-19th century. The lidded box is of long rectangular form with rounded ends and stands on a narrow flat base and has a molded shaped body with a wide upper rim, the inner box with two raised ridges to the inside probably to support toothbrushes. The domed shaped cover sits neatly within the rim of the box with the flat shaped edge overlapping. A scroll twist handle is applied centrally. The body and cover are both finely hand-painted with detailed floral designs with blue piping painted to the edging and handle. The box and cover have an impressed R makers mark. The exceptional quality of the decoration and style of the piece is similar to that produced in Wales at Nantgarw and Swansea, but also by some of the finer English porcelain makers at the time.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
