About the Item

This heavy porcelain, lidded box by Waylande Gregory depicts a crested Phoenix bird in flight, its feathers dotted in black and its wing lined in gold. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. He produced several larger and more elaborate animal-form pieces in the 1950s, among which this is one. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums.
