Folk Art Box by Bergsma with Baroque Angels Arts Crafts Style Owls More

About the Item

One of a kind antique box by master carver and sculptor S.A. Bergsma from Friesland, Netherlands. Earlier this year we purchased a number of items from a local museum in the Northern Province of Friesland and this unique box is another one of the unique pieces we acquired then. This large, meaningful and highly decorative box comes with some amazing, hand carved decorations and together they reveil the amazing design and carving skills of this award winning Dutch artist/artisan. In one of our other listings we actually have the award that he won in 1906 at the World Fair in Milan, Italy. This box he created later on in life (circa 1940-1950) and it has Arts Crafts, Amsterdam School and Baroque elements. Because of the text 'Tietje Bergsma, Born 14 May 1914 at Minnertsgea' we know it commemorates the birth of his daughter and we believe it was a gift for one of her birthdays. The heraldic crest or coat of arms at the center is that of Barradeel, of which Minnertsgea at some point in time was the capital. This coat of arms could not be more Dutch, because from top to bottom it represents the local geographical situation, land-dike-sea. Some may find the winged angels crudely carved, but that is because they were made to look exactly like they would have been carved in the Baroque era. It was in that era that this crest of Barradeel was first introduced (between 1620 and 1660). The Arts Crafts bird sculptures are perfectly carved like they would have been by other master carvers in the 1910s which ofcourse was the era in which Tietje was born. This excellent quality carved and highly decorative box with lots of social and cultural history and with a deeper meaning can be used for all kinds of purposes. As you can see in our images it is perfectly clean on the inside and it has several practical compartments.
