About the Item
A very rare and beautiful art deco lidded box. Glazed and hand painted with an amazing portrait of a woman with curly hair.
Designed by Rudolf Knörlein for Friedrich Goldscheider, Vienna, Austria, 1930-1936.
Good vintage condition, with a couple of chips.
Stamped with manufacturer's mark to underside: 'Goldscheider, Wien' and 'Made in Austria'.
The box is characteristic of the works its designer - Rudolf Knörlein (1902-1988) - realised over the span of nearly a decade for the Goldscheider manufacture ; Knörlein became later on the artistic director of Gmundner Keramik, and was awarded with the first prize at the Parisian World Exhibition in 1937. He also worked for the Wiener Werkstätte.
For over half a century Goldscheider created masterpieces in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and Art Deco style. Famous artists such as Josef Lorenzl, Stefan Dakon, Ida Meisinger and the two perhaps best known Austrian ceramic artists Michael Powolny and Vally Wieselthier worked for Goldscheider.
