About the Item

Antique set of 3 porcelain dresser boxes with lids features sculptural forms in different sizes and striking blue and gold decor. One box has rectangular shape, and two other boxes have squared forms with rounded scalloped corners, mirrored in the lids outlines. One of square boxes is slightly wider and lower than another; variations in size and form between all 3 boxes crate visual interest while maintaining the unity of decor. Bright blue and gold colors of the decor stand out on crisp white background of fine semi-transparent bone china. The boxes are marked on the bottoms with H&C*/L France underglaze mark, dating back to 1888-1896, in green, and the decorator/overglaze marks in red, "Haviland C* Limoges Bailey, Banks Biddle Philadelphia"; the lids are marked with the decorator marks only. Bailey Banks Biddle was incorporated in 1894, changing the name to Bailey Banks Biddle Company. Overall, the marks date the set to 1888-1894. Bailey, Banks, Biddle was a fine jewelry and gifts retailer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It started in 1832 as Bailey Kitchen Company, and 1846 it reorganized as Bailey Company. In 1878, a new partnership was formed between Joseph Bailey II of Bailey Company, George W. Banks of JE Caldwell Company and Samuel Biddle of Robbins, Biddle Company as well as special partners, Eli Bailey and Clayton French, named Bailey Banks Biddle. The elegant, sculptural forms, high quality craftsmanship, and colorful, highly detailed decoration will make the set of boxes a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Transitional, Modern Country, Hollywood Regency, Neoclassical, Glam, Collected, or Contempo Sizes of the boxes are: 1) 4" by 4" by 1.75" high 2) 3.65" by 3.65" by 1.95" high 3) 4.15" by 2.32" by 1.59" high

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Pair of Porcelain Cups Saucers, France 1894-1931
By Haviland Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 2 demitasse cups and 2 saucers was made by Haviland Cie in Limoges, France. The Art Deco style form of a footed cups, with 3 small ball feet, is rather rare and hard to find, especially in coffee or demitasse size. In this set the pieces were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Victorian style motif of pink English roses. Calm light pink and green colors are accentuated by bright gold rims and gold trim on handles and ball feet; crisp white color of semi-translucent porcelain showcases the soft, delicate decor without overpowering it. The pieces are marked with green underglaze manufacturer mark Haviland France that dates to 1894-1931. The set is in very good antique condition with minimal wear on gold that is appropriate to its age. The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china...
