About the Item

This superb Indian spice box is of a larger scale than normally seen. It is highly decorative and original. It is made from a solid block of dense wood with a well-hollowed, chiselled-out interior. All the fittings are original and are hand-made in wrought iron, including the hanging chain. The box is beautifully hand-carved with intricate foliate patterns and an impressive bird with a continuous scroll design around the front, sides and back. The box's original use was to contain and protect valuable spices. The box has a pin slide catch to fasten and open the box, and an original central chain and hook for hanging. Often at this time in India, kitchens were open, and this box would have been hung, locked to keep pests and insects out from its valuable contents. The box has a lovely original patina with a dry, old, polished surface which presents bronze-like colours. Equally, the wrought iron fittings have a lovely age-related natural finish. There is on small historic repair to the left side of the closing edge of the lid. This repair was done a long time ago. Indian, circa 1790
