About the Item

A charming cylindrical box with a domed lid made of black lacquered papier-mâché, known as japanning, is decorated throughout with chinoiserie scenes featuring small figures in a garden, a balustrade, bamboo, and rocks, executed with gold dusting and painted highlights. The elaborate interior is lacquered in a very light blue-grey, providing an elegant and sought-after contrast to these pieces. Both its shape and technique point to British workshops specializing in papier-mâché during the Regency and Victorian periods. The absence of a mark is not uncommon, but the quality of the lacquering, the finesse of the gilt decoration, and the shape of the lid suggest a connection with the great English houses, particularly Jennens Bettridge in Birmingham and London, active from the 1820s and famous for their black lacquers with gilt and polychrome decorations, as well as Henry Clay in Birmingham, active between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, whose varnished papier-mâché processes became a classic. This attribution is suggested by stylistic similarity in the absence of a legible stamp. This type of small box, known as a table or desk box, served several functions and was used to store pins, needles, and small sewing items, to hold pastilles or sweets like a parlor candy box, to hold powder and toiletries, or to organize small sealing pastilles, seals, stamps, and small office supplies. Gilded chinoiserie, very popular in Western ornamentation, responded to the exotic taste of the 19th century and went well with interiors in lacquer, rosewood, mahogany or tiger maple.
