About the Item

Charles X-era travel nécessaire consisting of citronnier wood case, decorated with small polished steel studs and fitted with key, containing chiseled gold, turquoise (insets) and mother-of-pearl sewing kits. The mercury easel mirror, attached to the inside of the lid by two movable tabs, when removed uncovers a folding case for storing paper documents and correspondence. The sewing kit, housed in a removable cabaret with several compartments, consists of scissors, agoraio, thimble, sewing punch, pencil case, glass bottle with cap, folding ruler, four thread winders, four spools and a pincushion pad, the latter embellished with embroidered floral composition. The gold utensils are adorned with chiseled phytomorphic motifs and punched with the hallmark "ram's head." Needle feeders and one thread winder (originally set of six) missing. On the back of the mirror is preserved the original Maison production label "Rue St. Honoré, No. 154 MAIRE Ft. de Necessaires DU ROI." Attached is an expert report issued in 1980 by the Paris gallery "La Galerie des Laques."
