About the Item

Miniature Chest of Drawers with Marble Top Origin: Central Europe Material: Mahogany, maple Date: 19th century Dimensions: H × W × D: 29 × 28 × 14 cm Description: Small-scale chest of drawers in mahogany with a calm, finely polished mahogany veneer surface. The rectangular corpus features three flush-fitting drawers, each framed with a narrow line inlay of maple. Original turned mahogany knobs. The top is made of fine-grained, dark grey marble with subtle white veining and a straight profiled edge. Base with slightly projecting plinth and four turned bun feet. Back panel and structural elements in softwood. Remarks: Miniature furniture of this type served in the 19th century both as instructional models in craft training and as representative workshop pieces demonstrating technical skill. The precise construction of the drawers, the well-balanced veneer patterns and the refined maple line inlays attest to a high level of craftsmanship. The marble top corresponds in material and execution to contemporary prototypes found in bourgeois and courtly interiors of the Classicist and Biedermeier periods. Condition: Very good, well-preserved condition with minor age-related wear. Surface with a fresh shellac polish; marble top with light, age-appropriate signs of use.

Large Early 19th Century Empire Chest Of Drawers, Mahogany, Ormolu, Paris, 1810
Located in Greven, DE
Large Empire chest of drawers Paris Mahogany Early 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 97 x 136 x 68 cm Description: The architecturally designed front of the chest of drawers is divided into three zones. A plinth connected to the floor forms the lower section, on which two sturdy columns rest, supporting the upper section, which houses a large drawer. Three further drawers are housed in the centre section of the chest of drawers, which recedes behind the columns. A black granite top forms the upper end. The drawers, the back panel and the body are made of oak, except for the panels in the side walls. The top section with the ledge drawer is connected to the body with wooden wedges and can be removed for transport. This detail can be clearly seen in one of the photos. Exquisitely beautiful mahogany veneer, horizontally mirrored on the drawers at the height of the key entrances, enlivens the smooth surfaces on which the lavishly gilded bronzes unfold their effect. Some of the very finely crafted fittings can also be found on Empire furniture by Jacob...
