About the Item

This lovely 1950s French decorative lidded box features a bright yellow vinyl plastic scooby or craft lace (in French scoubidou) with black contrast thread. The box boasts a stunning geometric design on all faces. There is no visible designer's mark. The box is in good condition, with some oxidation on the hinges, but still in excellent working condition. Measurements: 8.07 in wide (20.50 cm) x 4.94 in deep (12.5 cm) x 3.75 in high (9.50 cm). Note: Scoubidou (craft-lace or scoobies) is a knotting craft primarily made for children. It originated in France, where it became a fad in the late 1950s and has remained popular. They named it after the 1958 song by the French singer Sacha Distel. The success was so popular that many designers in France started using the material to create furniture and decorative home accessories. The most common type of yarn used in crafts is flat and comes in many colors, sometimes known as wrapping yarn. Another quality of scoubidou wire is flexible, round, and hollow plasticized PVC tubing. It is sold in different colors, sizes, and styles and is used to craft items by tying them together with knots. Due to their elasticity, they form tight and stable knots. Their hollow section allows them to sag and deform when pulled. They also allow weaving and can include many geometric shapes and designs. (credit: Wikipedia).
