About the Item
A very rare and attractive mid century onyx intarsia box, made in Italy in c. 1970.
This beautiful box is most distinctive thanks to its unique design and its large size. The base and lid of the box are composed of rows of different coloured onyx, ranging from malachite green and sardonyx brown to agate grey and marble white. All have been circular cut, arranged in rows and set together in green resin to create a polka dot effect in multi-coloured hardstone.
The frame separating the two sections is of metal with a chrome finish, giving the piece a very elegant Modernist design.
It is a most unusual box and highly attractive mid century box: colourful and richly decorated in a delightful pattern.
