About the Item
Rare pair of Danish Art Deco lidded boxes, executed in hand-hammered brass with elegant fluted (cannelé) decoration. Each box presents a unique sculptural variation — one with a broad, full-width lid that completely covers the top, the other with a smaller, centrally placed lid that creates a striking contrast in proportion and form.
Crafted by a Danish gørtler (metal artisan) around 1920, the pair beautifully captures the transition from the organic expressiveness of Skønvirke (Danish Art Nouveau) to the more architectural and refined idiom of early Art Deco. The richly textured brass surface, with its subtle patina and traces of handwork, speaks to the exceptional craftsmanship of the period.
The design shows kinship with the elegant simplicity of Just Andersen’s early metalwork and the restrained geometries later seen in the furniture and silver designs of Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen. Both influences reveal a shared pursuit of harmony, material integrity, and sculptural form — hallmarks of Danish design in the early 20th century.
A rare and tactile pair that bridges function and sculpture, equally suited as desk objects, jewelry boxes, or decorative centerpieces in both classic and modern interiors.
