About the Item

This very interesting pair of wedding or presentation boxes formed part of the decorative collection of Mrs. John Gutfreund and resided in their home Murry House in Villanova Pa. Crafted in Italy between 1800 and 1815 this pair of neoclassical inspired boxes are made of carved and gilded walnut. Shaped as multifaceted ribbed shallow boxes raised up on baluster shaped stems on step plinths. The carved details on the boxes are water gilded over a gessoed ground and retain the original gilding. The fan ribbed lids are surmounted by classical female busts in gilded wood. The interior of both boxes is upholstered one in a purplish red color the other in green. These would have been used as the container of small precious gifts like jewelry at a wedding and housing momentoes in a home. The boxes have a nice old French polish which is in good order and the surface finish is rich and shiny making the many small plains sparkle. There is some slight warping to one side which is not surprising and both upholstered interiors a somewhat soiled and worn.
