About the Item

This exceptional Provençal fariniero, originating from the Arles or Nîmes region, is a finely carved example of southern French folk craftsmanship from the end of the 18th century. Executed in richly patinated walnut, the piece features a front-opening sliding hatch designed to protect flour from humidity, a traditional and highly functional form specific to the region. The façade is elaborately carved with symbolic motifs including flower-filled Médici vases, sheaves of wheat, florets, and a heart suggested within the rear pediment—ornamentation closely associated with fertility, abundance, and domestic prosperity. The openwork crest and handles display refined hand-carving, while the uprights and shell-form feet are equally detailed, reflecting the skill of the regional artisan. The walnut surface retains a deep, warm patina developed over centuries of use. Completely unrestored, this fariniero remains in authentic condition and represents a rare Louis XV–Louis XVI transitional example, combining sculptural presence with strong decorative character.
