About the Item

Rare small lidded trinket box with church-shaped handle on the lid is hand painted in two tone blue on white porcelain background. Floral decor on the body of the box and on the lid, irradiating from the center, appears to be heavily influenced by folk art and Arts and Crafts style. In 19th century Gzhel was called "Russian Staffordshire", comparing it to the most important English ceramic center; after some decline after an industrial crisis in early 20th century, the manufacturing was revived after 1945, and currently Gzhel is one of the main porcelain manufacturers in Russia. The box is clearly marked with 3 factory stamps on the bottom: an underglaze green factory logo with 1818 underneath; an underglaze blue "47" - possibly a model number; and overglaze red triangular stamp with letters inside, probably an artist or decorator mark. Lack of "Made in Russia" or any similar mark indicates that the piece was made for sales in Russia and not intended for exports. Similar factory marks on Gzhel pieces that appeared on Christie's and other online auctions, as well as in online catalogues, were dated to second half of 20th century.
