About the Item

A Red-Lacquered “Armada” Wrought-Iron Money Chest with Elaborate Lock, 17th Century A striking and well-preserved example of a 17th-century “Armada” money chest, crafted in heavy wrought iron and finished with an uncommon red lacquer. These compact strongboxes—also known as money caskets or “Armadas”—were designed to safeguard valuables during travel and are renowned for their ingenious internal locking mechanisms. This particular chest features an intricately engineered lid lock, typical of the period’s finest blacksmithing workmanship. The piece presents beautifully, with its historic character intact and two original keys accompanying it. A fine collector’s object, both decorative and functional, representing early European security craftsmanship at its best.
