About the Item

Here is a box from the 1950s by Salvador Teran (Mexican 1920-1974). This beautiful and charming hand-wrought brass box is decorated with chickens in small glass mosaic tiles featuring sophisticated neutrals and greens--very on-trend colors that work in a wide variety of interiors. The box measures 6" deep, 8.25' wide and 1.75" high. The box is stamped on the bottom, “hand-wrought, hecho en Mexico. Salvador” and no. 475, The box is in very good condition with no missing tiles and only minor wear consistent with age and use. When closed, there appears to be a slightly larger gap between the lid and box on the left side--but this is only pointed out for accuracy and complete transparency and by no means detracts from the overall presentation of this piece. Salvador Teran was an outstanding designer and silversmith. After leaving the Spratling workshop he joined his cousins, the Los Castillo brothers, where he worked under the Castillo name for 13 years. In 1952, he went on his own with 23 silversmiths to Mexico City where he established his name as one of the most outstanding Taxco silversmiths. At that time, the shop called La India Bonita sold his pieces alongside those of Spratling. Teran experimented with various media, especially stone and glass mosaic, in both small objects as well as murals.
