About the Item
Venice, 18th century
lacquered wood and decorated with cut-out print (arte povera)
Refined shaped case, fully lined with vibrant red lacquer. The surfaces are adorned with "arte povera" decorations with gallant scenes, landscapes, and eighteenth-century figures applied through cut-out engravings and painted. Floral motifs and gold friezes enrich the edges and base.
The brilliance of the lacquer, the quality of the prints, and the sinuous shape hark back to 18th-century Venetian production, a center of excellence for ornate lacquer furniture and objects for both the local and export markets.
Conservation status: wear and minor color fading consistent with age; original patina.
Venetian lacquers and the technique of "arte povera"
In the eighteenth century Venice became one of the main European centers for the production of lacquered objects, intended for both the local market and for export. The use of colored lacquer-often red or green-and "poor art" decorations responded to the taste of the time for the exotic and for bright decoration, but with a more affordable process than expensive oriental lacquers.
The technique involved applying cut-outs from engravings on paper, sometimes hand-colored, under a layer of clear varnish-an ingenious process that combined craftsmanship and graphic design. The subjects depicted gallant scenes, landscapes or floral motifs, reinterpreting the festive and theatrical spirit of Venetian culture.
Caskets like this one were objects of use but also of representation, intended to hold letters, jewelry or writing implements, reflecting the refined and cosmopolitan taste of Venetian residences of the time.

1750 Venezia Italy Lacquered Red and Yellow Wooden Box Jewelry Case
Located in Brescia, IT
This is a large and bright red and yellow lacquered wooden box, entirely decorated with prints cut and applied with the tecnique called "arte povera" . At the centre of the lid a large country landscape with figures inspired by 18th Century Venetian views that recall the themes of Arcadia. The prints come from the manufacture of Remondini Bassano, that was the most important printers in the Europe at that time.
This surprising lacquered box is an elegant piece that can be useful as a jewelry case, perfect to match in any elegant home.
One of the distinctive characteristics of Venetian Baroque and Rococo furniture and decorative objects is the skilful use of lacquers. Lacquer is a natural resin that was very rare in the past, imported from the East and used to create smooth and colored surfaces on furniture, ready to be finely decorated with refined floral designs or exotic animals.
Venetian artisans became masters in lacquer processing which required time and patience because it was made with many steps.
The Venetian style deeply influenced furniture design throughout Europe, but none reached the Venetian level in terms of beauty. The skillful use of lacquer and carvings defined Venice's unique style during the Rococo period, its Golden Age.
The piece is in excellent state of maintenance and guaranteed original in every parts. The surface was only cleaned not restored and it is original.
