About the Item
A Luxury desk box designed by Wedgwood.
This is a magnificent desk box created in London England during the late Victorian Era, back in the 1880's. The fabulous box has been crafted in a rectangular shape with plain carved parts, pieces of 18 karats yellow gold, a natural white pearl of 3mm and an intricate octagonal cameo panel masterfully made by the Wedgwood company. The box is fitted at the reverse with two elaborated gold hinges and a hinge push lock at the front. The lid is embellished on top with an incised and engraved frame of yellow gold which is holding the cameo depicting the triumph of Bacchus with several mythological figures.
Wedgwood
This is the iconic British ceramics company, was founded by Josiah Wedgwood I in 1759 in Burslem, England, pioneering mass-produced, high-quality pottery like Queen's Ware, Black Basalt, and the famous Jasperware, revolutionizing design, manufacturing (using techniques like transfer printing and direct mail), and marketing to become a global luxury brand known for innovation and artistic standards. After flourishing for centuries, the company faced financial challenges in the 2000s, leading to acquisitions, notably by KPS Capital Partners in 2009, which integrated it into WWRD (Wedgwood Waterford Royal Doulton), eventually becoming part of the Finnish Fiskars Group in 2015, while maintaining its heritage and production of luxury good.
Bacchus
Bacchus, the god of wine, is the main figure and is personified by a half-dressed boy seated in a basket throne with vine leaves, holding a large spoon as a scepter in his left hand. For the Romans Bacchus, was the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and wine, of fertility, orchards and fruit, vegetation, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre in the ancient Greek culture. The iconographic theme on this sheet refer to the legend of the triumph of Dionysus, or as the Romans called him, Bacchus the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, the son of Zeus and Semele. The Bacchanalia was a religious festival in honor of the wine god, Dionysus. The legend of Bacchus leads this small entourage of mythological characters in his triumphant return from the victories in India. Similar to The Loves of the Gods on the vault of the Farnese Gallery by the Italian renaissance painter Annibale Carracci.
