About the Item

A refined Wedgwood blue jasperware lidded box, featuring the iconic matte periwinkle-blue ground with crisp applied white classical reliefs, a hallmark of Wedgwood’s neoclassical production. The box is beautifully proportioned with softly rounded square form and fitted lid, decorated throughout with classical motifs inspired by antiquity. The lid is centered with a classical figural scene depicting draped female figures in motion, rendered in white relief against the blue jasper ground. This imagery is drawn from Neoclassical designs popularized by John Flaxman in the late 18th century and widely used by Wedgwood as an homage to Greco-Roman art. The figures symbolize harmony, beauty, and idealized form—core themes of the Neoclassical movement. A delicate laurel leaf border frames the lid, while the sides are adorned with floral rosettes and stylized anthemion motifs, all applied by hand. The underside bears the impressed “WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND” mark, dating the piece to the 20th century, produced using traditional jasperware techniques developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 18th century. This box is both decorative and functional—ideal for jewelry, keepsakes, or display—and remains one of the most recognizable and enduring Wedgwood forms. Details: Maker: Wedgwood Material: Jasperware Color: Classic Wedgwood blue with white relief Decoration: Classical figural scene after John Flaxman designs Mark: Impressed “WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND” Origin: England Date: 20th century Condition: Very good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age; no chips or cracks observed. About the Imagery The central relief reflects Neoclassical figural groups derived from ancient Greek and Roman art, popularized in England through the work of sculptor and designer John Flaxman (1755–1826). Wedgwood collaborated closely with Flaxman, and his designs became synonymous with the brand’s intellectual and artistic legacy. Scenes such as this represent idealized femininity, movement, and classical virtue—timeless symbols that continue to resonate with collectors. Styling Ideas: Style on a bedside table or vanity for jewelry or heirloom keepsakes. Display on open shelving with books, intaglios, and framed engravings. Pair with other Wedgwood jasperware for a classic English vignette. Beautiful in traditional, English country, Regency, or “old-money” interiors. Makes an elegant gift piece or collector’s accent.
