About the Item

A rare and most impressive 18th century European parcel ebonized rosewood hardstone bronze pewter bone ivory marquetry tabletop cabinet casket. Of exceptionally fine quality, lavishly decorated, large scale, with secret compartments, it was almost certainly a guild chest. The guild chest was the guilds most important object, acting as both a treasury, storing the guilds most important ocuments and valuables, and displayed prominently in guild meetings and rituals, serving a crucial symbolic role in guild life. (Additional info below) Continental Europe, most likely Southern Germany or Northern Italy, possibly Augsburg, circa 1725 Dating to the early 18th century, exceptionally executed design, modeled in period Baroque architectural articulation, the case mounted with bronze carry handles, flanking rectangular structure framed by turned spiral barley twist columns, surmounted by a raised blackened molded top with concealed sliding panel compartment and decorative floral carvings, atop the hinged lift-top, opening to reveal central storage with remnants of the original parcel gilt red paper lining and long brass strap hinges, retaining brass pin at right edge acting to release secret hidden side opening drawer, resting on broad stepped molding shaped base. Grand luxuriously appointed design, featuring refined, highly sophisticated decoration on all sides, rare precious woods and exotic materials, including scarce diamond-shaped blue lapis lazuli semi-precious stone and ornate applied silver metal mounts, veneered in elaborate string work and cross-banding, highlighted by intricate hand engraved pewter plaques, depicting mythical scenes of Perseus and Andromeda and the chariot of Poseidon, after the works of Wenzel Jamnitzer (1507-1585), a renowned German silversmith and engraver at the court of the Holy Roman emperors and active in Nuremberg. The recessed panel flanks embellished with dark rich wood veneer inlaid with contrasting delicate incised ivory marquetry inlays, depicting central Renaissance figure with scrolling foliate rinceaux, exquisite quality and workmanship reminiscent of Peter Piffetti (1701-1777) and Ferdinando Pogliani (1832-1899), a Turin pioneer in precious woods inlay and regarded as one of the top Italian cabinetmakers in history, the latter a highly skilled Milanese cabinetmaker known for his use of hardstone mounts, ebony, and the finest bone and ivory marquetry on his luxury furniture. GUILD CHEST: Emerging in medieval Europe, guilds were a historical association of merchants or artisans in a particular trade or craft that was responsible for regulating their members, apprenticeship, and the quality of their work. Each regional guild group, such as judges and notaries, bankers, lawyers, woodworkers, joiners, stonemasons, blacksmith, tailors, bakers, political, and religious, would have a single guild chest, often referred to as the "mother" or "vault”, it was treated as something sacred, acting as a treasury, housing the most important documents, money, awards, special tools, books, with jewels and other valuables often hidden in its cleverly hidden secret box.
