About the Item
A gorgeous authentic and original emerald green and gold sommerso Murano glass casket, made in Italy c. 1960 and retaining its original label for Bucella Cristalli of Murano, Venice.
This decorative Italian art glass jewelry box is made with the distinctive Sommerso technique, whereby a layer of green glass and another of gold are suspended within a clear glass body. This creates what looks like a lush green bubble that glows from its centre and scatters the lights beautifully. The corners of the box are faceted to enhance the fragmentation of the light and colours.
The trinket box also has gilt brass mounts, retaining almost all of its original gilding – wonderful condition considering its age. It makes for an extremely decorative tabletop box whose appearance is constantly changing depending on the angle from which it is observed.
Condition is very nice considering its age. There is a light, hard-to-see scratch on the lower section of the front, and a similar light scratch on the base corresponding with age. There is a miniscule nibble on one of the front faceted edges only noticeable by touch. The hinge is slightly lifted in the interior centre due to the weight of the lid. These are only perceptible on close inspection and do not affect the overall impression of this box: it is quite mesmerising and highly attractive in person.
