About the Item

This elegant antique musical jewelry box has been made in the form of a windmill with a removable domed roof. The roof lifts to reveal a shallow circular burgundy velvet-lined compartment. The exterior of the windmill bears four large rectangular hand-painted polychrome enamel plaques featuring Dutch courting couples engaged in dancing, drinking, and otherwise relaxing in each other's company. Two of the windmill's blades are decorated with young men and two with young women. The removable circular domed roof has been painted with a bucolic image including a shepherd and a maiden engaged in a picnic. The shepherd on the lid has been depicted leaning against a long wooden staff. A white lamb stands alongside him as the young man looks down at the maiden reclining on the ground. The maiden is shown glancing down at a wicker picnic basket and a large painted ceramic jug resting beside it. She is attired in pink and red and has a voluminous yellow blanket lying across her lap. Her bare lower leg extends beyond the hem of her pink skirt and the lamb appears interested in nibbling on her toes. The scene includes a large pink rosebush behind the young lady; she holds cuttings in her lap. The background includes leafy green trees along with a windmill and other buildings in the distance. The windmill is mounted on a gilded metal hexagonal platform with 6 spherical ball-form feet. The platform retains its original gilded chain-link fence threaded through six gilded posts. The underside of the platform has a wind-up ring key. There is a lever at the top edge of the windmill that actuates the functional internal music box mechanism. It should be noted that the blades do not turn automatically and can be moved by hand. The enameled windmill jewelry box is presented as found and has not been cleaned or altered in any way. As an antique, the piece shows signs of age including discoloration/tarnish/traces of verdigris to the metal, all of which emphasize its authentic antique appearance. The underside of the metal base has discoloration including a rectangular void related to the placement of a former label. The enamel plaques are free of chips while the blades exhibit stable micro-fissures visible under magnification. The domed enamel lid is slightly loose within its metal collar. The velvet lining inside the compartment has no rips or nap loss and is slightly loose inside the domed lid. The windmill jewelry box stands 8.5" tall as measured to the top of the lid. It is slightly over 9" tall from the base to the top of the central blade when the blade is positioned vertically. The outer points of the blades measure 6.5" across when positioned horizontally. The base is 7" across as measured from its furthest hexagonal points and 6.25" across when measured across its flat sides. The internal measurement of the jewelry compartment at the top is 3.125" from edge to edge and .75" deep. The piece weighs 2lbs 14oz. This antique hand painted polychrome windmill displays very well and has a timeworn appearance making it appear to have been handed down through the family. A charming antique find!
