About the Item
Fine antique Imperial Russian lacquer Racing Winter Troika jewelry casket by the Lukutin Workshops
19th Century
In exceptionally fine condition with original key
The Russian lacquerware tradition can be traced back to Peter the Great. The Tzar visited France and Germany in his travels abroad and saw the fine objects created with this material. He then imported skilled artists from the west to instruct Russian icon painters in working in this medium.
In 1818, Piotr Lukutin began to produce enchanting, finely hand painted lacquerware pieces which quickly became status symbols among the aristcracy and the elite. These included boxes, tea caddies and desk accessories and expressed a distinct traditional Russian style through the finely hand painted scenes of idealized Russian life. By 1823, the Lukutin firm employed over fifty artists and included a school for training apprentices and in 1828, Lukutin received a royal edict, the highest honor, which allowed him to use the Russian Imperial double headed eagle emblem with his trademark. Russian lacquerware would go on to become one of the most recognizable art forms of the country, prized as mementos and miniature works of art. Pieces were sold abroad in such distinguished establishments as Tiffany
Co. in New York with Louis Comfort Tiffany refering to them as "Black Gold" for their consistent demand and his inability to keep them in stock.
This beautiful jewel casket features a delightful hand painted scene of a Racing Winter Troika on the cover. It is in exceptionally wonderful condition with the original key present and is fully marked with the Lukutin trademark on the interior of the box. Bun feet add an element of style and attention to detail. The lock mechanism does not turn, as is usual with objects of this age. Fine original patina.
