Museum quality and condition, 1860s jewelry box with perfect working silver lock and key. This more than excellent condition antique box is the largest 19th century mother-of-pearl box that we ever had the pleasure of offering. It has everything that any antiques dealer (or collector) around the world is looking for. It is in the best condition possible, it is perfectly original, it is highly practical, it is extremely stylish and it is larger than any mother of pearl box from the 1800s that we ever owned. For the connoisseurs we have placed a normal size mother of pearl spoonbox from the same era right next to this museum quality jewelry box and you can immediately see the significant difference in width, depth and height. It is difficult to get your head around how these objects were made. Creating flat pieces of mother-of-pearl and cutting them perfectly and glueing them in perfect patterns onto wooden pannels and putting the box together with handcrafted, silver hinges and covering te rims on the inside with flat carved bone plaques and putting a small 'lock' in exactly the right place and carving circular bone feet etc. It is almost too much to take in and it must have taken an enormous amount of time to create this stunning box. These boxes therefor were only affordable for the very, very well to do. And this largest mother of pearl box we ever saw, must have been too dear, even for some in the upper class. Finding this magnificent object in its excellent condtion more than made our day. This majestic box was made for keeping and showcasing ones most special jewelry such as bracelets, wrist watches, earrings, broches etc. Nowadays it could also be put on display for the rare and magnificent object that it is, but since this stunning box was made to be used and enjoyed, we would prefer that. It is a very well made gem and highly practical with seven drawers and a good working lock and key in the right door and two sliding brass 'locks' in the inside of the left door. This box opens and closes perfectly and its striking presence will grace your vanity or dresser in a way that no modern piece ever could. The drawers come with a stunning blue lining and the three 'tiers' each have their own kind of interior. The top tier may have been made for pocket watches or circular brooches. The one below could have been made for necklaces and/or bracelets and the two bottom tiers, consisting of four drawers would have been used for all other types of jewelry.
