About the Item

French Cobalt Blue Opaline Crystal Box with Ormolu Mounts and Scalloped Edges The box is formed in a rectangular shape with a scalloped exterior surface that creates a uniform rhythm around all four sides. Its cobalt blue opaline crystal body presents a dense, opaque color with smooth interior and exterior planes. The lid mirrors the base in both shape and proportion, opening on a hinged ormolu mount that frames the upper and lower rims. When opened, the interior reveals straight walls and a flat base, all in matching cobalt blue opaline crystal. The ormolu mount follows the full perimeter of the lid and box, fitted with a single front clasp. Its surface maintains an even tone and precise angular edges, securing the crystal components into place. The hinge is integrated into the rear section of the mount, allowing the lid to rise to a full open position. The scalloped sides are evenly spaced and identical in dimension, showing careful shaping of the opaline crystal during production. This form corresponds to French opaline work produced in the nineteenth century, where richly colored crystal bodies were commonly paired with mounted gilt bronze fittings.
