About the Item

Rare and important jewelry box in solid mahogany with inlays of lighter woods and mother-of-pearl forming an abstract facial motif, reminiscent of a stylized ape. Denmark, circa 1900. Measurements: 29 cm W × 20 cm D × 7 cm H. A rare and finely crafted jewelry box by Cathrine Horsbøl, recognized as Denmark’s first female cabinetmaker and designer. Executed in solid mahogany with intricate marquetry and delicate mother-of-pearl inlays, the composition is both playful and precise — the geometric and organic forms subtly suggesting a stylized face. The work exemplifies Horsbøl’s ability to merge technical mastery with a distinct artistic imagination. Horsbøl achieved her cabinetmaker’s diploma in 1893 — the first woman in Denmark to do so — and soon established her own workshop in Copenhagen. Around 1900 she became a leading figure in the emerging Danish Arts and Crafts movement, admired for her refined craftsmanship and her decorative experiments with inlay, color, and material contrast. Her designs occupy a unique place in Danish design history, standing between late 19th-century Art Nouveau sensibilities and the early stirrings of functional modernism. Horsbøl’s pioneering career paved the way for later generations of female designers and artisans, and her surviving works are exceptionally rare. A remarkable piece of Danish design history by one of the country’s true trailblazers.
