About the Item
A rare and exquisitely crafted British Empire travel jewelry box, made in England circa 1840. The exterior is richly veneered in burled yew wood and amboyna, prized for their deep figuring and warmth. The lid and front are elaborately inlaid with delicate floral motifs rendered in silver, mother-of-pearl, and ebonized wood, with a central cartouche surrounded by elegant scrollwork and naturalistic detailing.
The edges are trimmed in mother-of-pearl with geometric cutwork, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship. The box opens to reveal a vibrant interior lined in pleated red velvet and trimmed in ebony, with a removable fitted tray above a richly grained faux rosewood base. An oval bevel-edged mirror is framed in ruffled velvet on the inside lid.
A hidden lower drawer opens to unveil a cleverly concealed travel writing desk, complete with original gilt-tooled leather writing surface, pen trays, and compartments intended for inkwells and correspondence.
A remarkable combination of function, artistry, and Empire-era ingenuity, this box is both a luxurious accessory and a masterwork of 19th-century portable design!
