About the Item

Napoleon III Period Ebony Luxury Box by TAHAN, Paris, with Expertise. Stamped “TAHAN Fr de l’Empereur” — official purveyor to the Emperor. A rare and impeccably preserved example of 19th-century French cabinetmaking, this rectangular box is executed in dense, polished ebony and embellished with finely engraved brass ornamentation in foliate scrollwork. The inlay work is sharply defined and symmetrically composed, demonstrating the technical mastery and aesthetic rigor characteristic of TAHAN’s atelier. The lid bears a central cartouche engraved with the monogram “LD”, indicating a bespoke commission. The box retains its original key and functional lock, both integrated with discreet elegance into the brass-mounted façade. The interior is lined in cream moiré silk, luminous and intact, offering a striking contrast to the dark exterior. All structural and decorative elements remain in exceptional condition.
